The end of June saw the end of my conditioning phase and some testing to monitor my progress. Testing went very well highlighting areas that might need some more development than others whilst also showing progress in the rite direction.
July brought about a new phase of training and new challenges. These included; continued work on masters research project, paid work and training full time. Transferring gym and sprint sessions to the push track, this is a lot easier said than done. Transfer sessions take there toll on the body so recovery is very important, nutrition, stretching and hydrotherapy all play a key roll in this.
A highlight of July was being asked to return to my old school, Bennett memorial, to be the guest of honour at there sports presentation evening. It was amazing to hear about such great achievements from young athletes in a wide range of sports. The opportunity to return to my old school also allowed me to return home to see my parents, which is always nice and gives me more motivation and inspiration. However training doesn’t stop for a visit home, I was able to utilise the “better body shop” gym in Riverhead maintain specific training in a positive environment.
Returning back to Bath some an increase in the training volume in all aspects. More time of the push track, running track and in the gym. With the focus to perform well at the first push ranking and secure a place on an international training camp to Switzerland. As the saying goes, hard work pays off and I was selected to attend the training camp. This was based in a small town in the Swiss alps called Andermatt. The village is at 1400m altitude so extra time was required for warm up, rest between repetitions and recovery. It was great to work intensely with other crew members and develop cohesion while also learning from coaches about technique and small adjustments that can be implemented for greater results. We were very fortunate with the weather as it was very warm (30 degrees) during the day and then thunderstorms in the evening.
Returning back to the UK the focus has now moved to further evaluations on the push track and applying the techniques learnt to make improvements.
August is a busy month for training, working and more masters work. If all goes to plan training will move to another level and make more steps on the road to Sochi.
