After much deliberation I made the decision to become a full time athlete. This was a big step for me as it is something that I always wanted to do but was never sure of how to go about it. First step was to relocate to Bath, where there is a high performance training centre and the home of British Bobsleigh.
The first week or so was tough and had to find my feet pretty quick. I managed to get lost in the city of Bath several times! Believe it or not getting lost was actually a pretty good learning tool for me to find my way around!
After making contact with coaches, physiotherapists and the sports massage staff in the centre I was able to settle into full time training.
I am now following a structured training programme and have had initial screening and testing as a starting point.
Whilst settling to new life in Bath I was requested to compete at the British university championships in Bedford, to throw the discus for Brighton University.
After not having picked up a disc for about 7 months, this was a little daunting. However I was soon able to find my technique and managed to throw 50.24m claiming a silver medal.
Time away from training allows me to focus on completion of my research project for my Master’s Degree in Sport and Exercise Science. It is important to be able to switch off from training, so my degree is a good outlet for me. I have been supported by some good friends and training partners in getting settled. Coming up is a training camp in Loughborough at the end of the month…..
