With less than 150 days until the Winter Olympics at Sochi, every day training has an increased in significance. Over the last week I had to prepare for testing on Sunday. Testing is an on-going part of any athlete’s training as it provides an insight as to current fitness levels and feedback on training programmes.
In the week leading up to a competition/testing an athlete will go through a taper so that when the time is right they can produce their best.
Some 22 athletes lined up for push testing to try to be selected for a training/testing week in Latvia on ice. Only eight places and two wild cards were on offer so competition was high. After two hours of high energy and caffeine filled action, the testing was done. I had managed to produce personal bests, showing that I am able to perform at the right time. With continued hard work came a result and I was given a wild card.
Allowing your body to recover is essential but when time is short an athlete’s body can break down as they are constantly pushing and searching for extra 1% gains. Getting the balance right is hard.
Moving forward, preparations will continue towards Latvia where further testing will be performed. Testing becomes more specific as the push track is ice as opposed to the tartan track we use at Bath University.
Combining training with working and completing a master’s degree in sport and exercise science is even more of a balancing act, with good time management and support from people around me I am able to keep moving forward in my journey to Sochi.
